To calculate heat loss through a material or building element, we use the heat transfer equation based on conduction. The amount of heat lost depends on several factors, including the U-value of the material, the surface area, the temperature difference between inside and outside, and the time over which the heat loss occurs.
Steps to Calculate Heat Loss
1. Determine the U-value
• The U-value measures the thermal performance of the material or structure. You may already have this value, or you can calculate it by taking the inverse of the R-value of the insulation.
2. Measure the surface area
• Find the total surface area (A) of the building element where heat loss occurs. This could be the area of a wall, roof, or window.
3. Identify the temperature difference (ΔT)
• This is the difference between the inside temperature and the outside temperature.
4. Calculate the heat loss (Q)
• Multiply the U-value by the surface area and the temperature difference.

To calculate the heat loss over time (in hours), simply multiply by the number of hours
Key Considerations
The lower the U-value, the lower the heat loss, as the material has better insulation properties.
Heat loss also depends on factors like air infiltration and radiation through windows, which may require additional calculations.
