Brown fused alumina is an abrasive material made from high-quality bauxite raw material, fused and crystallized at high temperatures. It is known for its exceptional hardness, strength, and abrasive properties. Brown fused alumina is widely used in various industrial applications, particularly in abrasive and refractory applications. Here are some key characteristics and applications of brown fused alumina:

Characteristics:

  • Color: As the name suggests, brown fused alumina is brown in color, which is a result of impurities present in the bauxite raw material used during its production.

  • Hardness: It is characterized by its excellent hardness, making it suitable for abrasive applications where a strong cutting action is required.

  • Crystal Structure: Brown fused alumina typically has a trigonal crystal structure, which contributes to its toughness and durability.

  • Toughness: It is known for its toughness and ability to withstand high impact forces, making it ideal for applications involving heavy grinding and cutting.

Applications:

  • Abrasive Blasting: Brown fused alumina is commonly used as an abrasive material in sandblasting and abrasive blasting operations. It is effective for removing rust, scale, and old coatings from metal surfaces.

  • Grinding and Polishing: It is used as an abrasive material in grinding wheels, sharpening stones, and abrasive belts for grinding and polishing metals, ceramics, and other materials.

  • Refractories: Brown fused alumina is used as a raw material in the production of refractory bricks and shapes due to its high-temperature resistance and durability. It helps to build furnaces, kilns, and other high-heat applications.

  • Surface Preparation: It is employed for surface preparation and conditioning in industries like metal fabrication and shipbuilding before painting or coating application.

  • Precision Machining: Brown fused alumina is used in precision machining processes where a consistent and high-quality surface finish is required.

  • Ceramic and Composite Materials: It serves as a reinforcement material in the production of ceramics, composites, and abrasion-resistant coatings, enhancing the mechanical properties of these materials.

  • Cutting Wheels: It is used as an abrasive grain in cutting wheels and discs for cutting metal and other materials.

  • Bonded Abrasives: Brown fused alumina is used in the manufacture of bonded abrasives, including grinding wheels and abrasive segments.

  • Anti-Skid Surfaces: It is used in the construction industry to create anti-skid surfaces on roads, bridges, and walkways.

Brown fused alumina is available in various grit sizes, allowing users to choose the appropriate abrasive size for their specific application needs. Its combination of hardness, toughness, and abrasive properties makes it a valuable material in numerous industrial and manufacturing processes where abrasive action is required.

Brown Fused Alumina is smelted from mixture of high-alumina bauxite, carbon material, pig iron scraps and chemical admixture at high temperature. It appears dark brown color. With Alumina content above 95%, it has high density, high hardness, good refractoriness and good wearing resistance. It is widely used in industrial refractories and abrasives production, and reputed with the nickname of “industrial toothpick”.

Grade: Grade A Brown Fused Alumina (Al2O3≥95%)
C Residual: Calcined BFA, C≤0.05%. Low C BFA, C≤0.10%. Ordinary BFA, C≤0.15%.
